Carrying paper vehicle documents every time you go for a drive can be a hassle. Loose papers wear out, get misplaced, or get left behind right when you need them most.
Fortunately, the official mParivahan app (developed by the National Informatics Centre) lets you store and show your vehicle details—including your active insurance policy—straight from your phone.
Here is a clear guide on how to check your insurance validity on mParivahan and how to use it as legal proof during traffic checks.
How to Check Vehicle Insurance Status on mParivahan
Verifying whether your car or bike insurance is updated in the central database takes less than two minutes:
- Download & Sign In: Install the NextGen mParivahan app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Register using your mobile number and enter the OTP to log in.
- Search Your Vehicle: On the home dashboard, tap on Virtual RC or the main search bar.
- Enter Registration Number: Type in your full vehicle number (e.g., MH02AB1234) and click search.
- Verify Vehicle Details: You will see basic vehicle info. To view full details, the app will ask for the last 4 or 5 digits of your Chassis Number and Engine Number.
- Check Insurance Dates: Once verified, look for the "Insurance Valid Upto" field. If your insurer has synced your details with the VAHAN database, the exact expiration date will appear here.
Is Digital Insurance on mParivahan Legally Valid?
Yes, absolutely. You do not need to carry a printed copy of your motor insurance certificate if it is active inside the mParivahan app.
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and provisions of the IT Act, 2000, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued an official directive stating that electronic vehicle records produced through mParivahan or DigiLocker hold equal legal standing as original physical documents.
Traffic police officers and RTO authorities across India are legally obligated to accept these digital records during routine checks.
How to Present It as Legal Proof to Traffic Police
To ensure a hassle-free verification during a traffic stop:
- Show the In-App Virtual RC: Open the app and display the live Virtual RC page containing your encrypted QR Code.
- Let the Officer Scan: Traffic officers use the official eChallan app to scan this QR code, which verifies your insurance and registration status directly against the central server.
- Avoid Screenshots: Screenshots or photos saved in your phone gallery are not legally valid. The document must be shown live inside the official mParivahan app.
What to Do If Your Insurance Details Aren't Showing?
If you recently renewed your policy but mParivahan still shows "Expired" or blank details, here is why that happens and how to fix it:
- Upload Delay: Insurance companies usually take 2 to 7 working days to upload fresh policy records through the Insurance Information Board (IIB) to the VAHAN network.
- Mobile Number Mismatch: Ensure the mobile number registered with your insurance policy matches the one linked to your vehicle's RTO record.
- Temporary Backup: If you bought the policy recently, carry a soft copy PDF or a physical printout until the VAHAN database updates online.
